storied iii: uphold

Arhaus’ legacy with handcrafted upholstery began not long after we opened our doors in 1986. Our business was growing, as was the need to offer exceptional upholstered seating to our customers. And I knew exactly what I wanted our assortment to be. Silhouettes and fabrics that felt current but timeless. Frames made from sustainably sourced wood. Heirloom quality that would last.
When I couldn’t find what I wanted, I set out to build it myself.
I drove through the foothills of North Carolina, the epicenter of American upholstery making, and met with workshops of all sizes. Eventually, I found artisans who shared my vision—many of whom we still work with today. Cutters of fabric and leather. Tailors. Frame builders. Each one working with a masterful precision matched only by their passion for quality.
From that initial journey almost forty years ago, Arhaus Upholstery has grown to include more than 175 collections, hundreds of silhouettes, and the most exquisite materials sourced around the world. It’s so much more than that, too. It’s the sectional that hosts your family movie nights, and the recliner you sink into after a long day. The new swivel chair that updates the entire room, and the sleeper sofa you turn to whenever guests come to town. Making these pieces for you is the greatest honor in our business.
In 2024, we sent a team of writers and photographers to those North Carolina foothills, where they visited our upholstery artisans. They learned about the process of furniture building—the cutting and sewing, the tufting and hand-tying—but more importantly, they learned about the people behind these practices. The hundreds of hands that touch every sofa and sectional. The laughter you can hear amid the whir of sewing machines and the clang of hammers. The importance of building things to last… and with love.
I am so proud to bring our Storied series home, and to share Volume III with you.
With endless gratitude,
John Reed, Arhaus Co-Founder
